Origins of Language and The Future of Language

This week we have studied the 3 approaches to the question of "the origins of language", "The Divine Theory", "The Evolution Theory" and "The Social Theory". Bearing these and the nature of language(last week's question) in mind, could you please foresee the future of the language? Try to picturize the future world in language context.

You might want to check these as well...

language is a living thing so it will be more devoleped than now in the future.there will be more new words, more new structers, because people invent new things, and new inventions will need new name.it is imposible but maybe one language will be dominant in the world and every body learns this language. in this way people will understands each other easily tülay kaçar 3231040002

we all share the idea that language is a living thing,it breaths when we use it,improves when we create new words,it has aches when we do not care about its nature and dies when we do not use it.because of not using them in normal life, unnatural languages could not lıve ,despite having easiy rules.i do not belive that one day everbody speak the same language as a mother tongue,it sounds as an utopia.because every country has a different history,geography,economy...which feature is most important for you ,you have more words about it or you give a special meaning to the word that no one can understand if he/she does not share your background.for example bread is holy for us,we can not sit down on a bag full of bread as if we are tired but it does not a problem if the bag is full of wheat.we can not tell the difference to a person of another nationality.georges perec's family dies in 2.world war after this he writes a novel adopted for them without usig 'e' in alphabet.in french 'e' sounds 'ö' and 'ö'means 'they'.he wants to show that how his life is, without them by not using 'e'.cemal yardımcı translates this novel in the same surprising way not using 'e' in turkısh.at thıs point problems start, because it is not the same thing which perec tries to do.i hope i could show what i want:)

in the future as the technology is developing the language will develop also.because when humankind find new technological things he has to give names to them and this will make language more developed.on the other hand some words will not be used in the future as they will be deformed according to the basic needs of humankind.also idont think that people will speak one language in the future but time is the best solution for that question and we will see whether people speak one language or not if we can live until that time

SEA AND RIVERS

If we symbolise the languages with rivers,we can say that in the future there will be a language sea, supplied by different rivers. Some of whom are powerful whereas the others are weak.Being a powerful one is up to the development level of the owner of this language.Whoever grows faster in the area of science and technology, the ones who make new inventions and the ones who follow good policy will be the POWERFUL and it will be the dominant river in the sea...

I think, it's the best way to look to past to foresee future, and for me, the future of language will be what we did in past and still do like; banning, working and fighting with strong belief to stop that new madness from a writer, poet or an artist like we did in past and still do.This is our future in language context and our hole...

As far as I can think and imagine, the roots of the language lies both in evaluation and social theories. First human beings tried to comminicate with eachother in order to come up with their primitive needs like searching food, warning others from danger, etc.and began to imitate the sounds of nature which they are surrounded with. Of course it didn't happen from today till morning, it took decades, centuries first to be aware of the importance of the comminication, second to be intelligent enough for struggling to imitate these natural sounds, because it depends on the brain capacity, on its cognitive development. Then they realized that it works, that they agree on some sounds for which they get reactions, they decided to use them for some purposes.Everything comes from the human needs, doesn't matter if they are primitive,or civilized, they live in jungle or big cities. Again people will decide in the future what kind of comminication type they choose.Maybe they will stop talking refuse to face to face interacting after all these wars and fightings, mainly because of misunderstandings and they would prefer just sending sms or e-mails in a more progressed technological ways. It's hard to predict what life will be like in a hundred years. But, maybe we can say that people will drive flying cars, buildings hundreds of stories tall will be allowed or for every illness, solutions will be found and our life will be long. That is, in most of area, a lot of changes will be such as in science, art, medicine, history, technology. Here,I want to focus on one detail of this picture. But,what kind of language will be use to express them?I think,we cant say certainly, one language will be to communicate easily in these areas. For instance, now English is the most common language, but it is not a single. Also some terms about medicine are german or french.Besides,I can say that in the future,it may not be english that is the most common language.Because,as everything is, most likely, country that has most powerful, will be get ahead. But,it can't mean that it’s language will be single language in the world.

Each language has its own people, own culture, own story and own roots. If the owners(people) of the language widen their points of view and increase their life standards, their language will also progress.Today's language indicates us what people did for it from the beginning up to now.So the future of language is on its owner's hand. It's up to people to make it live or to leave it to death. And I believe people will take care of their language.Because it is the indispensible tool which they use it for communication.I do not agree with the idea "there will be only one language at future".It sounds really impossible.

"I am always sorry when any language is lost because languages are pedigree of nations.”says Samuel Johnson.I also think that dying of a language overwhelms me as though it were the death of the earth. So we know that language is like a human brain. USE IT OR LOSE IT?Language requires to be spoken not to extinct.Even if it seems a bit irrelevant and pessimistic I want to look from another perspective. In my opinion the forces conspiring against native tongues seem to be largely electronic.Satellite television, cellular phones ,the Internet all let people speak to each other instantly all over the world and all drive the need for languages that many understand. In most cases that language is English. No doubt that is not necessarily a bad thing since a common language allows people to communicate. However most of the languages are swallowed up by English,Arabic,Spanish and other major languages. As technology lets people communicate more major languages are strenghtened and minor ones weakened. The outlook is somewhat grim.Because this prevents language diversity. So it is not difficult to foresee the future in language context.Languages that can be preserved by the speakers even as second or third language will live but those spoken by a small rate will be no chance.I also doubt new languages will be born.
Everybody including bedouins on camels will have wristwatch telephones. It is unlikely that Arabic will rediversify the way Latin did…We should care about this. The world will be less interesting less beautiful…

To me, the future of language will be formed in the mystery of the origin of the language.Language is a living machine, as all machines were invented based on some codes, it was invented by the same system, too.As people in diferent places use a different version of a machine, we are using a version of language.I believe, one day somebody will solve the mystery of the origon of language,so the codes of it.On this mentioned day, we will understand all of the languages by using only one version of it.

Language is both power and weakness of human beings. One person can use his language both the benefit and damage of men.In the future people will use a language which is unique and universal. When we look at the origin of language we see that language is an alive thing and it always changes but in the begining there could be a single language that God gives us as a magic(according to Divine Theory)and I think the future of language will be its begining. In fact I think one universal language is better than various languages because all people understand each other easily when they speak the same language. At the same time the process of language and brain is nearly the same. When we look at the origin of men we can see that the development of brain and modification of genes easily so language is affected by this evolution(according to Evolutionary Theory). In addition to this, language is a social thing and it affected by social groups. The development of sense and references with social groups has a relationship between language(according to Social Theory). The last thing that I want to share you about the future of language is,language is affected by three of these theories because all of them added sonmething to the process of language.

(bir hafta geriden geliyorum ama:))After the lesson ı have thought about :’what is language?’but ı couldn’t find a magical definition, so ı asked neighbours and got approximate answers with my school friends. One of the answers: ‘language is ink.’it means that: a person without language is like a pen without ink. As a pen can’t write without ink, a person cannot means anything without language…
And the other answer: ‘language is fire.’ You can cook meal with fire(your language), but at the same time you can burn houses (houses of heart) with fire(language).as yunus said:

I think language is an organism growing day by day and it is inevitable for it to enhance in use and depending on this, meaningful structure in near future. in our globalizing world, social sciences is getting more and more important.therefore, being an expert in any language enables us to achieve utopic ideals quite easily.humankind have come to an incredible point in languge so far,but more ca n be accomplished.maybe a new language type never used before can be developed .

There is language since the first humanbeing so origins of language is very deep. But in old times it was different and it is very different now.People used it as they wanted. It changed very much and this will be so in future, too. But I have a theory that in the future everybody will talk the same language and this will be turkish.Because the world is getting smoller and cultures are coming together. One day all of we will have the same culture and language.

As my friends said language is alive and like all alive things it is effected from this developing world in a good or bad way.Especially one of the most effectual thing in language is without doubt the developing technology. That's because the more technology improves, the more individualizm becomes more dominant.Hence it decreases the communication between people. In addition it kills the most important part of the language, which is the BODY LANGUEGE.Because of such bad effects of technology, language gets blunt. On the other hand it also brings some good things. For example, new concepts are added to the language with this development.Perhaps it can warm our hearts a bit.

As language is an unavoidable need for the communication of people with each other ,language will be alive as long as people live.It is a livig thing with people so the needs of people change, language will change in a way.Maybe some words we have ben using for years will not be used or new words will be added in our language according to the needs.I can not say something exactly about the future of the language.I hope that our language will be dominant in the world.Shortly I think that the language which has existed with humanbeing will live ,change ,develop and die with people. It depens on humanbeing...

so far it has been said that language is a living thing so l can say that:the world's language system is undergoing rapid change because of demographic trends, new technology, and international communication.these changes will affect both written and spoken language.altough many languages are going to extinct new ones are emerging in groups.

I think, the fate of the language won't change in the future. As it hapenned in the past,we,human beings, will use different words, structures to name our new inventions and make some of the words die because we won't need them. For example,we do not generally use the word 'daktilo'after the invention of computer. LANGUAGE IN FUTURE

Language is an adaptive medium and it develops itself according to human needs. Human needs change according to the progressive technology or the globalization of communication systems, but also language politics, which are bound to geopolitical visions (e.g. Europe).
As we are living in age where our needs depend on these circumstances some people are pleading for a “lingua franca”.

The English language is seen as the “lingua franca” the universal language which should be understood by everyone, which might abolish the language barriers all over the world, which might prevent conflicts caused by language diversities.
Impressive statistics show that the English is dominant and well established on all the six continents. Moreover it is the main language of the internet, science and technology, international trade, airports, air traffic, books, newspapers, etc.
But despite these statistics I think that the usage of a “lingua franca” is not realizable. A linguistic generalization would be an inhuman evil (see Newspeak in Orwell’s “1984”) and a destroying process of cultures. Apart from this there are people to whom learning English is a big effort but also military, political, economical; natural and religious aspects prevent the English to become the world’s language (this is another discussion!). Unfortunately it does not prevent the contamination of our native language through Anglicisms (Chinglish, Dunglish, Germish, Spanglish, etc.).
The future will be the same; the language which dominates the world (maybe the English will be disintegrated like Latin in good times) will continue to flow into our languages to satisfy our needs, to help to express us accurately, to trim the circumstances, to catch the time.
Sometimes it is impossible to avoid Anglicisms or other words transferred from other languages, but nevertheless I think that each language has its own value and like an expensive work art it needs to be protected!

Language is an inner instinct which we use to express our thoughts and feelings in a verbal way. Moreover it reflects our personality since we use it to express ourselves. So it turns out that in a way the survival of humans depends on language, because it gives us the feeling that we belong to a certain community and it keeps us away from loneliness which is the second biggest fear of people.Language links us to the other humans around us and makes us feel somewhat important.Language is such a powerfull instinct which can make one the greatest, but it can also destroy a person. What i mean is we should be carefull about when, where and how we use language,we should think twice before we utter a word.So if i have to summerize language is a powerfull inner instinct that helps us express our mind and soul,to relate to others around us and it gives sense to our existence, but as i mentioned above we should be cautious and know how to control such a powerful instinct. So i don't think that language will change in the future, because as i said in my view it is an instinct and instincts don't change.Science and technology might develope, our race might develope, but language will simply remain an instinct for communication between humans. The foundation of the human race is COMMUNİTY and the foundation of community is LANGUAGE.I think that community and language will never lose their significance as they have never did so far.

When we look at the history of the literature,we can see that invasions,revolutions... influenced the future of a country and its language, for example;the time of 1100s,Norman Conquest changed Anglo-Saxons all lifes and also languages.More elegant words entered to their language that they had never heard before such as army,court,defense,faith,prison,tax,beef...Also these words are the clues of the system of RULES & DEMOCRACY.Although Vikings were too barbaric and warrior nation,French invasion had changed their life and language.
Nearly the same siuation occured in our history ,too. With the revolution of language by Atatürk,arabic alfhabet went and latin alfhabet has come ,therefore;ı mean that alteration is somethıng that it will never change but it should have borders because it is the identity of a nation, part of its culture ,however; what about today?I think we are changing day by day expecially under the pressure of other languages.Laerning a foreing language is a perfect thing but it does not mean to lose yourself, your language.English is now a language that controls nearly every country like a king that's why, unfortunately ,our language is affected because it is as if an opening a fire on our language also nation's morality.Every area of our life english is served to us,even shops' names are english, that is very tragycomic because here is Turkey not England or Germany but it shows that foreign languages are invading our even basic life day by day and it is not called developing ,it is called degenerating. It means who have power in his hands, think himself right to control the world's economy, politics, education, money, technology and language without any respect..!However ,in the futre i believe that justice wins in the end,if we won't give them permission-changes- to change and forget our language.

ıt is certain that language will live foreverat least as long as human live on this planet. however what if language kills people? i am writing these sentences considering the last events occured in a meeting of Europian Union. let's remember what happened? the prime minister of France has left the meeting just because of the fact that a FRENCH member of the meeting has presented his speech in the language of ENGLISH people. and prime minester did not want to hear his valueble cıtızen's speech. and also he exclaimed that "french people are proud of their own language they should protect it. so how can i bear a French person talking in ENGLISH" however the most striking part of his speech is here "it is unacceptable to let english CONQURE ALL THE WORLD" When ı hear thıs sentence i could not prevent myself from thinking/ imagining people having war against each other.i mean language wars like petroil wars and land wars.so the future of the language is still unknown unpredictable... by Okan Konu ocean55

Future of Language
Language is a very important thing now of course and it will be like this in the future I think. The communicative tools are developing so everybody can see everything at the same moment. So everybody can hear and learn a foreign language. There is no foreign language now actually and foreign languages might completely disappear in the future I think. English is being spoken in a lot of different countries. For example England, United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa...etc. These countries lost their own language and consequently their culture. The same thing occur in Iraq I think. So one dominant language and consequently one dominant culture might originate in world in the future I think. It can be right or wrong, it can be debate, but our world is going to this form I think.

To be aware of issues in cross-cultural communication is becoming increasingly important. Any of us may travel or meet travellers. We may work with members of other cultural groups. We may learn a foreign language. Such situations inevitably bring us into contact with other ways of speaking, other modes of behaviour and other views of life.We draw some conclusions about the importance of attitudes in cross-cultural situations and of the need to raise awareness and understanding of other cultures. In my opinion Language is like an iceberg some aspects are visible with fairly obvious meaning, but a larger part is hidden or taken for granted.therefore our assumptions about future cannot be sense and logical but;subjectively in the future all nations will be on a common ground on which working principles and systems of interpretation which most of us automatically use everyday.I mean in the future some associations like United Languages(inspired by
UN):-) can be set up in order to create a universal systems of communications tools maybe language maybe some abbravetions like msn language.

According to my search in internet ı found that More than 6,000 languages
are spoken in the world today. But some linguists believe that by the end of
the century the influence of globalization and new technologies like the
Internet will have most people speaking one language -- English.ı think this
thought is totally true because in todays world internet is commonly used
and in the future this usage ration will increase so the one language will
be dominant -English.some experts say say that the most widely used
tongues, like French, Arabic and Chinese, will remain in everyday use
despite the growing popularity of English. But some experts disagree about
the prospects for a global language, almost all are concerned that many more
obscure tongues are on the verge of being lost forever. Meanwhile, ı have
lerned that some Americans believe that the United States is in danger of
losing its native tongue and argue that English should be the nation's
official language.
In my opinion despite all these thoughts we as a Türk protect our
language and try to make it rich.

It seems to me that the reason why humanbeings needed to speak is mainly because of the necessity to communicate with others. For this reason I can say that the origin of the language goes back till the first man.First man was created and,no sooner, the language -at least the sounds- occured.
Finally, how the birds borns with their wings, the humanbeings born with the need of communication.

the language develops like a child. It borns, grows up,becomes older and dies.If we care about it,it grows up in a fertile way.
It transfers cultural heritage to the other generations,so the our future depens on our language. Some words are forgettable in changing society
,but new words can be created gradually,by the way it shows the fertility of the language.
I think the languages of the nations which survive for it are still going on transfering and being alive in the future.

Like every other common thing, the feture of language is hidden in the secret of the origin of the language. Language is a comlex system of rules. When one day people solve the codes(the origin of language) that are hidden behind that complex rules, we will solve all of languages by knowing only one of them.If this above mentioned situation comes true, any of the languages will lose their importance and we will be struggling to learn the codes behind that complex rules, not the languages.

When we look at the contınuous changing of language nobody can say that our language is going to be same after 50 years. When we were ın high school we even translated the poems that are in our language word for word in literature lessons. One of the most important thing that causes changing in language is "the multicultural lives". People are affected and affect the languages.Because people live in the same country they get used to hearing certain words from another language and they start to use them as well.Sometimes they try to change the words to fit their own language. In this way we lose the language tie that connects us to our ancestors. 3231040006
