Here's your task: Raise you head and eyes while you are walking on the street and look for names of the bussinesses (names of shops, or anything of this sort); see and give us examples of the word formation processes given below.(More than one example is welcome)

Where do new words come from?Who makes them up?How do they enter the language?New words have several sources,but the rather mundane answer to these questions is that most new words are derived from other words..In fact, as far as I know two thirds of all English words come about by joining existing words in a new combination.For example:Compound words:website,airport..At the same time,there are words that have function modification by compounding.I guess I can give the example of “spoonfeed” for this.”spoon” is a noun and “feed” is a verb.But “spoonfeed” is a verb and made up by compounding.
Word coinage:Actually we can see everywhere the coinage words almost everyday.For example;selpak,Xerox,nylon,etc.These are trade marks actually.

Blends:Frankly I can’t remember except the examples of “motel” and “brunch”.
(motel: a hotel on the motorway.)
NOTE:Another common method of coinage is shortening the words .For example;“gym”or “net” or “telly”.Of course the most familiar to us is EMAİL:it’s both compounding and shortening.

I always wonder the creaters of words and how words occur.After the lesson,I observe around and notice there are a lot of ways to make a word.So I want to give you some examples to these ways as I can do

Blending:I can not find any example.Sorry
Acronym:Obe=order of the British Empire.Aids=Acquired immune deficiency
We can find a lot of examples but I want to find only a few of them.As you can see there are lots of ways to name objects.Some occurs by combination,some occur by first letters of each word…At the same time these are not the whole methods.There are lots of other methods for naming object as far as I know.

Actually, I was taught that the name of the words has no meaning, the is no relationship between the meaning and the name of the word in most of the cases, of course there are some exeptions like in every area, but the words we are using in daily life came out accidently.The very previous people used some sounds they heard fom the nature in order to make simple warnings,communications because they needed to interact for some basic needs, such finding food,protecting themselves from danger,etc.After several attemps of using a word, if they could get any reaction from the others for the expression s/he used they agreed on that particular word unconsiously and continued to use it every time. On the other hand it is obvious how many words in English have foreign roots and how many words it has been made because of the progression in technology and science and how many words are the combination of other single words or made up by the help of pre-suffixes.That's why there are lots of words in English and we wonder sometimes if we are unable to find one single proprate definition in turkish for this specific word.Turkish is a rich language too, but the richness is because of the many words which have arabic, persian roots and unfortunately they are labeled as tü, kaka so they are not widely used among young generation.So pure new turkish words are few for that reason. If there are some new invented by the Türk Dil Kurumu they are not wellknown and popular to use in the present society.
